About Experience
Join us for a private view and launch party of Gertrude Invites Mia Wilkinson in KOKO Gallery. The exhibition entitled Domesticated Hinny showcases the work of British artist Mia Wilkinson. At the heart of her works we encounter a reinterpreted but recognisable world, an uncomfortable nostalgia, thick brown curtains and lipstick smeared teeth. Bawdy characters, entangled in playful pantomimes, interwoven narratives, amongst the human figures there are animals and furnishings from a past era, invoking ideas of modern historic domesticity and the spirituality of modern folklore. Within the neon exuberance and cleaning product induced headaches lies a serious feminist observation, a critique of colonisation, of the unpaid labour of care and an unflattering proxy, the conversion of animal bodies into ‘live stock’. Wilkinson’s uninhibited figurative paintings hold a mirror up to our recent past, showing us our own neurosis but presented in the most playful way, in bright, thick, impasto. If you are unable to attend the launch, the exhibition will be in KOKO Gallery until 27th May.
